A hearing at the US Senate has blown up over tariffs imposed on Australia by the Trump Administration, despite the US holding a trade surplus over the country.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer was testifying before the Senate Finance Committee over the hugely contentious tariff policy, which has sent global markets plummeting.

Democratic senator Mark Warner questioned why Australia had been hit with a tariff despite an existing free trade agreement and the nation’s status as “an incredibly important national security partner.”

Greer, in response, offered up the oft-repeated line that “[Australia] ban our beef, they ban our pork,” and that “we should be running up the score on Australia.”

  1. I personally don’t care if Americans pay $2 more per kilo for beef (or whatever). Australia is surrounded by countries that will happily buy our beef. The damage to China’s economy is the real issue for Australia

  2. So senator Australia didn't respect the agreement of free trade. So we addressed the issue. Senator you don't handle foreign trade. Now we know why! Uninformed, unhinged & unhappy democrat.

  3. 1:26 It's extraordinary that the question has been posed as to what action America has actually taken to ensure their beef meets Australia bio-security requirements to allow it to be imported. Seems the US has done nothing and simply want to dump their poor quality beef. If anyone has an issue, then please tell me what quality improvement measures have been taken in the US. It seems to me that McDonalds rely on Australian imports as they also have concerns about US beef.

  4. I understand this forum is about beef tariffs but the broader implications are dire for Australians. I am 67. I cannot work because I have metastatic cancer. I am trying to make my retirement savings last to cover medical and other expenses. I woke up today and because of Donald Trump and his tariffs I have $10,000 less in my savings. A huge amount of money for me. Why?

  5. US beef isn't banned, it's just not economically feasible to import US beef. Why would Australian consumers buy US meat when they can buy their own local stuff for half the price? Australia buys American bacon but that is also hard to sell as Australians prefer lean Farm raised bacon over fatty factory bacon. This is how capitalism works – you buy what's the best value and choice.
The tariffs have nothing to do with trade – they are a tax on Americans. The 10% goes directly to the Government and will adversely affect all Americans who are living paycheck to paycheck.

  6. There is currently no ban on American beef. Auatralia produces more beef than it needs. America had about a 3millon shortage of heads of cattle to provide for the local markets. Trump is running on complete disinformation.

  7. “It may be dangerous to be America's enemy, but to be America's friend is fatal.”
