The Australian government has announced a news bargaining incentive, meaning social media giants must strike new deals and pay media companies for news content in a bid to maintain public interest journalism.

Communications Minister Michelle Rowland claims this announcement is about “backing Australian journalism” and “supporting the health” of Australian democracy.

“The news bargaining incentive is critical to ensuring digital platforms contribute to the sustainability of journalism in Australia,” she said.
