The Australian’s Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan slams the “betrayal” by the Albanese government over its low budget allocation towards defence.
This comes as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese made a major policy announcement ahead of the 2025 federal election, promising to slash HECS debts by 20 per cent.
“What an utter shambles … what a betrayal the Albanese government’s defence policy is,” Mr Sheridan told Sky News host Andrew Bolt.
“We cannot do the nuclear submarines and a conventional defence force on the current budget.
“We are now 100 per cent reliant on the Americans for our security.”

There Is a plan for Australia down the track – Sit back and wait for it – OUR politicians don't care about fellow Australians – OUR pollies have sold there soul for what ever $ starts floating around and WE will see it all unfold in 2025. – Wait fellow Aussies 2025 is going to be the year – Just remember where Albo built his house because its funny how a road was to be refurbished to his front door. God I hope he doesn't fall off the cliffs edge whilst laughing at as all plebs when he''s pissed , I dont think anyone will hear his cries for help – Not even his future wife – Poor little fella – This is all his doing !!!!
"Drongos "🤔
There definately needs to be systems in place that can't take away from military spending to put money elsewhere without weakening our defenses labor is done liberals can follow Vote One Nation
We are 100% relying on a foreign power for our defense? We are close to 100% dependent on another foreign power for our economy! When the geopolitics get complicated, we will be all ruined, said Hanrahan.
Laughing stock piss weak yellow hahhaa what a joke
I'm an American and don't want to defend the Australian government. If the Aussie people want to rid the China lite government they have for more liberty then I got your back.
I am not as negative about all you naysayers. Remember this is SkyNews and Andrew Bolt he is going to go after Labor.
Forget that for a moment.
If and this is a very big IF Australia was to be invaded they ( China) would have to go through Indonesia😢 to get here.
Despite you being so negative we have an excellent military relationship with Indonesia which would never agree to that.
Secondly if the enemy ( China) did manage to get a toehold on our country they would have to deal with us the Australians.
My belief is that we would oppose this and launch the most savage and brutal guerrilla war that would make the invaders pay.
Ukraine would look like a picnic. Australians would not allow an invasion.
Closing trade routes and shipments of raw materials to (China) by the (Chinese) doesn’t make sense.
Yes I know the military is at a low point but honestly the military itself is responsible.
You can’t just spend money to get yourself out of incompetence.
The generals and department of defence are not good economic managers.
Too many medals and ceremonies and not enough push ups and grunt work.
Just saying.
Historically both the Labor and Coalition parties have made woeful decisions about Australian military.
12,000 miles of coastline, massive oceans and one functional sub, viva Australia! This is not just Labor's doing, this is deliberate negligence by all the major parties but made worse by Labor. Perhaps negligence is the wrong word, sabotage sounds more fitting for what they have done and are doing to this country.
Australia doesn't need defence …. the Communist Chinese have our back ……………… Just get used to eating more Rice …
Albo is a traitor to us he will fly out as soon as Chinese come for us
But plenty of money for FOREIGN FOOTBALL , while born n bred Aussie's live in cars, tents, under bridges, the 2 party preferred has given us an ABSOLUTELY DISGRACEFUL RESULT , because they are working for their CORPORATE MASTERS
Billions and billions spent to defend Australia against our biggest trading partner China????crazy!,meanwhile Islam is invading our country through our airports and claiming asylum and welfare payments, farrrk!.🤔🤫😠😡
Sounds like you hate Australia 😂
Time to stop the Political handouts at all levels in Australia including to the Unions, time for them to do their duty!
Foul mouthed strong willed optimist! Awesome!
Only one reason for this inept Politicians. Give us poor Aussies a break. Vote Trump,
The opposition is too quite on many issues. If they want to win the next election they need to step up and raise their profiles. At the moment labor will win as they are buying votes through immigration, student loans, and the list goes on. LNP MUST to step up without delay…
Look how much Wong sent to unwra and how much the Albanese government has given away to other countries then all that tax payers money for there own pay rises albo is a traitor and is sending Australia backwards and destroying it
GEE WHY NO CHINESE MONEY?
Australia militarily is a flea on the bears gonads, so it is best we keep out heads down and initially allow the US to protect their investments and see what happens but in the meantime have national service to be ready
NORWAY IS CHARGING 78%TAX TO MINING, COUNTRY IS FLORISHING, WHY ARENT WE, ROYALTIES AND MINING NOT BEEING TAXED ACCODINGLY ARE JUST SOME OF THE REASONS…
Somehow acting like this is a new thing? Australia's defence has largely been out of our hands since the end of the second world war. We've instead relied on the Americans, as have most of the world. Its a recurring issue and just throwing more money at it without a plan won't fix it. You saw it with the Submarine deal, are they to be built under license in new facilities here in Australia? No of course not. Do we manufacture or sell our own domestically produced weapons or weapon platforms? No. This country relies on importing everything. Including out defence. That's good for the economy and saves money yes, but governments chopping and changing the budget every time a new one is elected won't fix that.
And the question is if we could even stand up to a modern military like China and the answer is a resounding no. Not without a decade of expanding the defence sector at a cost the country just couldn't manage. At this point we've been committed to being a US ally for so long that I believe its not possible to do anything else.
1 operational sub, are you kidding me?
We should just become a US state at least we would have proper leadership in Trump.
Even Peter Dutton could do a better job of running Australia.
