Four men have been buried under rubble, hundreds of metres underground, at a minesite near Picton on the outskirts of Sydney’s south-west.
Investigations are under way into what caused part of the roof to collapse.
The group became trapped about 3am deep below the surface of GM3’s Appin mine at Douglas Park.
NSW Resources regulator Anthony Margetts said they were 400 to 500 metres underground.
“This incident involves the sudden collapse of a roof directly above where these workers were working,” Margetts said.
It’s believed one man managed to dig himself free, and the others were pulled out after spending an hour partially buried.
Two of them were taken to Wollongong Hospital, the others to Liverpool.
All escaped with non-life threatening injuries.
NSW Ambulance Inspector Dylan Snape said one of the men, aged in his 50s, had head and pelvic injuries.
Multiple agencies are investigating what went wrong. | *Subscribe and 🔔: http://9Soci.al/KM6e50GjSK9*

Safety under question
Its mining …
And sadly, it's risky.
But an accident in 1979? And an accident today… That is an amazing record. 😮
The unions will ride this all the way to the federal elections
Wait…Picton is Sydney? Thats new
Never mind bro
This Mine has killed and injured Workers , when i was growing up in Sydney during the 60s,70s and 80s ,us Teens used Appin road as a shortcut to Wollongong on our Motorbikes and Cars from the Liverpool area .
I guessing it’s a coal mine not that reporter could include that little bit of information.. seems to be the new normal not to paint the whole picture..
1 major accident in nearly 50 years of mining really doesn't equate to neglect, mismanagement or unsafe practice. I'm fairly certain this was an event that was outside normal safety inspections.
😮 apocalyptic y not using robots for excavation
Wait for the greentards to jump on this.
Not Sydney you lunatic media Sensationalists
Mmmm. Channel 9. Sydney ends at Broken Hill.
Tragic hope all goes well for all involved
Praying that the men will be rescued soon n alive. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Violent rock bursts are common in the Southern coal fields and generally managed well by people designing mines and strata support. The NSW mines regulator is actively involved in creating régulations and guidelines in conjunction with industry for ensuring best practices are applied to mining in areas of deep reserve deposits where both Rock burst and out burst events are more prevalent and tend to be more severe when compared to that occurring in shallow coal deposits. I know for from experience Appin mine is one of the most technically complex operations and over many years have attracted some of the best mining tallent in research ad strata and gas management. I would be more concerned at problems of this nature occurring at many mines other than Appin mine. I expect there will be thorough investigations as a given and with actions moving forward I would be expect Appin mine to continue to stand out as a world class beacon for mining safety.
What I find a little disturbing is for media in many cases to run off sensationally reporting on events with little understanding or patience to gather facts and or to intelligently check their facts for accuracy and or relevance. Bad media stories can badly effect others with skin in the game. In this regard for families with loved ones working at this mine having concern for their safety my experience from past interactions with this operation and 45 years of working in and around coal fields tells me that the management at this mine do not stand for 2nd prize when it comes to safety. From an outsiders perspective , sometimes but for good reasons I have seen that the safety mantra at Appin mine can feel overwhelming to some. For me thats a good thing because the latter implies a casual attitude to safety !
🥰
Nobody cares how sick or rich you are by smiling whilst spreading propaganda. Don't want to see whining brat Jessy trying to be in the headlines constantly. Crybaby Jess loves blocking people. You have a history of being a tcnu priviledged Peter Overton
Let's hope none of them are Jewish going to a Sydney hospital
"AS THE WORLD CRUMBLES"⛈️🌊🌪️🌡️🔥🌋💥🙄
thank god everyone came out safe
I hate hearing news like this. My son worked at the mine that last year had a major fire. He’s now mining in another mine. I’m so happy the 4 guys got out and are safe.❤
Government have to help
And what is the actual issue here, since when does any body care other than the family of these people, im currently stuck in Bali, most probably under the supervision of the Australian government, waiting and baiting for a response they can pouns on, the repocusions you may have to deal with may be intense,. Australia is already flooding or not, and your so called Pauline and Gina are first class hipocrites, ..
If there's any more disasters like this then The Bee Gees might have to write a song about it (well the one remaining living member of them could). 🙁
Is it possible for you to use proper terminology and not sensationalism, when reporting a story?
This is why many can’t stand MSM, me included 😂
DNR
Too many accidents in mines all over the world going back hundreds of years. If they haven't managed to make it really safe by now they never will.
