During a Senate Finance Committee hearing on Tuesday, Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) questioned US Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, on the Trump Administration imposing tariffs on Australia despite the United States having a trade surplus.

  1. Look I completely agree we should never have been fucking hit with the beef and pork tarriffs, we have very and I mean very strong reasons why we don't import alot of foreign meat, especially when it comes to our eco system here when It comes to alot of other countries. But honestly if the hit is with a tarriff with the digital restrictions vrap my country is doing I won't blame America hitting us hard over that. But when it comes to trade of good specifically then no that's not on full stop. I don't know where they get we have tariffs on the USA when free trade means free trade. Unless Australia snuck some sneaky tariff in without the Australian people knowing about it, this just simply makes not sense. I love trump I wish we had a leader who cared about Australia just like he cares about the USA, and I agree with alot of other country's getting hit. But us Dosent make alot of sense as I said if the tariff was over the digital restrictions then yes I agree we deserve that because it's overboard. Look you can call me biased but this is one of the very few things I disagree with and honestly as much as yes your farmers really do deserve to be looked after, but so do ours and 10% could actually kill our farming industry here completely.

  2. What Greer is forgetting is a couple of things, the first, is we produce our own pork and beef, the second is that like others have said, it is a bio security risk, we do not need American pork and beef, or want it for that matter.

to put tariffs on us, because we do not want to buy pork and beef from the USA, is stupid, and defending such a policy, is equally as stupid.

  3. People forget that Australia is on the other side of the world and the cheapest way to get stuff there is on a ship that can take up to 6 weeks. You can get stuff here by air, but the price is based on weight and how much jet fuel it takes to carry an item of that weight to the other side of the world.

It's not like you can just put in a refrigerated truck and drive it to another country. We do that here to move goods between different states.

  4. AUKUS is not key to our security (Australia), or the UK. Its the "friends with America" tax we have to play to contribute to your military-industrial complex, so if we are dragged into a war America HAS to come save us.

That being said, as an Aussie, I'm all for the tariffs. Is about time America started focusing on itself, and for the rest of the world to become more self-sufficient instead of living off US handouts.

  5. Tariffs aside, Warner and Kaine have not supported one Republican initiative since they took office. They are always given press time on a daily basis to express their displeasure at anything not Democratic.

  6. It'd be nice if they would drop the false politeness. Instead of "You are a much smarter person than that" I'd like to hear them saying what they and all the rest of us are thinking: "You are a mouthpiece of an idiot, justifying his idiotic actions. Why?"

  7. Mark Warner just doesn't get it. These folks – regardless of how smart they may or may not be – are MAGA through and through. They won't answer the direct question about our strong relationship with Australia or the trade surplus we currently enjoy with the Aussies. No, instead they bob and weave and refuse to say anything that might upset their great leader – Orange Cheeto Jesus. And like a good Moonie, they have been programmed to adhere to the party line.

  8. With regard to the equation: it's not really bad mathematics. It just says that they're going to increase tariffs in a way that the cost passed on to the economy will equal the trade deficit.

You want to be asking: why is this desirable? Why should the US have to pay the amount of money that's already leaving its borders in tariffs?

The bigger issue here, isn't so much the mathematics, but that the analysis may be a bit shallow, and also the assumed values for epsilon and phi, i.e. the demand elasticity (how much a change in the number of some particular good in the economy impacts its price) and the consumer pass-through rate (the percentage increase of the price of that good after tariffs) respectively. The issue is that they've assumed these values are exactly inverses of eachother, so in the equation they end up cancelling out. There's no reason to actually do this. They ought to at least give an empirical estimate for epsilon. I don't know enough econometrics to tell you if the same can be done for phi, but assuming they will just cancel, will just set the change in tariffs to exactly equal the trade deficit as a percentage of exports. And then on top of that, they've set a floor of 10% for all tariffs; we don't know why this is done. So the mathematics, at least of the equation, is fine. That is the equation one derives for the change in tariffs if you want the total extra cost incurred to be equal to the trade deficit per unit exported, but the economics – the why this is a good idea – isn't addressed, and further the application of this equation contains some serious assumptions that aren't discussed at all.

  9. The only goal the Trump gang has through these tariffs is to bring more money into their pockets by ripping off US consumers. They are the ones who pay the tariffs to the US government, even though Trump says that the exporting countries are paying them.

  11. So where are the forbes maga fanboys now? They always celebrate uncut stuff on forbes when the chief clown spews his propaganda. But they are silent now, because this is all true and greer is just trying to haphazardly deflect facts without responding to anything…

  12. Actually we previously approved the import of uncooked U.S. Beef, Pork, etc. once the U.S. went through our Bio-Security approval process, which the U.S. did, but then they wanted to trade as a bloc with Canadian and Mexican Beef also, so decided to start the approval process all over again with Mexico and Canada on board. How is that Australia's fault? Furthermore, we had a free trade agreement (no tariffs either way), and we run a massive trade deficit to the US here in Australia. The U.S already sells us far more than we sell the U.S. Apparently we are the only first world economy in this position. Just to finish, why we have such tight bio-security is because our isolation means we do not have many of the common diseases that occur almost everywhere else, and we want to keep it that way.

  13. What happened? Not even a year ago USA and Australia were best of friends, now by the actions of one man, its hard to see things the same as they were. USA already controls so much of our government, now they're ruining us financially, too? How can we trust USA again?

  14. There are videos circulating of MAGA crazies who don't realise or refuse to realise that the US population will pay for these tariffs, and the people least able to pay for increases will have their budget decimated, asif the cost of living crisis wasn't enough, the people with plenty of money can afford expensive US made products, the average Joe cant!

  15. US tariffs on Australia will result in Australian citizens seeking sources other than the US for their product needs.
Tell the imbecile trump to expect the trade surplus the US had with Australia to drop drastically.
    Everything trump touches dies…
He is like a special weed killer that only kills food crops, flowers and trees…
Nobody wins from trump style "genius"..

  16. When do Americans Wake up ?? Trump has no Tariffs on Russia Belarus Cuba North Korea and of all places Afghanistan all Ameicas Enemies .So is Trump the Manchurian Candidate America's Enemy from within ??
