With President Trump’s tariff war looming over the Australian election, the next government in Canberra could use critical minerals as a potential bargaining chip to negotiate exemptions from additional levies. Ian Satchwell of the University of Queensland Sustainable Minerals Institute talks about the importance of balancing ties with the US and Australia’s biggest export market, China.

  1. What a piece of racist propaganda. The professor will not mention why China is withholding exports. He seems to think that China should just take USA attacks and suppression lying down and not retaliate. Oh well! Typical White Australian policy supporting racist. To be expected.

  2. Perfect illustration of CAPITALISM giving up -via price out. Australia & USA & CANADA did the cost effective route. China or India or Penquins, end up with the value added …jobs and technology to translate PRODUCT into metals.
Thanks to MILTON FRIEDMAN for FREE TRADE…..ya, and KRUGMAN.
    …we are stupid …sirs

  3. India's dream of becoming the next manufacturer of the world will have to be postponed again,😅 now that Trump wants to bring back manufacturing back to America because of the Indian aggression on the Canadian/American people. Remember "Hardeep Singh Nijjar" in Canada and a "Nikhil Gupta" in USA?

  4. Europe has the technology, just not the capacity yet to refine rare earths. Maybe Australia can make a deal with us in that area? We could protect the Suez Canal / Red Sea together, which would please the US ^^ and bobs your uncle .

  5. This is stupid America has no shortage of these minerals, it’s the refinement and processing they don’t have, just spend ur billions and build ur refinement processing plants problem solved, just don’t expect to make money from these plants though cause ur competeting with China and u can’t process it cheaper then China but at least u don’t have to rely on China to process ur minerals

  6. Doesn't matter shortly, Steven Hawkins was WAY OFF on his prediction of when the WORLD WILL END at the rate we are raping the planet for recourses, especially OIL⛈️🌊❄️🌪️🌡️📈🔥🌋💥🚷

  7. Bla Bla Bla…. From an Australian amateur Ecomomist.
If Australia is really smart, we will 'two-time' the US 'fiat' Reserve 'eurodollar' system, and we will have an affair with our OWN regional financial partners for a change. Let's distance ourselves from US arrogance and stupidity. Let's embrace, economically, China, BRICS, Indonesia, ASEAN, The EU, and Canada and Korea and Japan and others, little by little, using a new, gold and silver backed $HK parallel Reserve system. To keep from rocking the boat too much, The Hong Kong Dollar keeps it's peg to the USD. China has about half the world's gold, you see. Australia and Canada are top gold producing nations. We stop exporting gold. Gold is real money, savings, even a Tier 1 Asset at the Fed!
A river of world money will gently flow to where it is best treated. Away from the greedy spoilt Americans, towards real money and a giant new trading market. America is the nation to be afraid of now, and they need our US bases for their military dreams. I am definitely less afraid of hard-working China with their 6000 years of culture. And gold collecting

  8. China doesn't trade, it exploits

It cheats, it lies, it steals and it destabilizes

they consistently rip off everyone they deal with and break agreements like a meth addict who borrows money.

on paper it might look good, but in reality – its been proven over and over and over- they cannot be trusted and do not have equity in mind.

YT will probably censor this comment anyway

    just don't be naive.

  9. Australian government should always remember that Australia is nobody in world politics colony of British before colony of America now, tragedy is that politicians lying about this fact pretending and posturing

  10. The problem is, that around half of the Australian electorate have watched the movie Avatar, and are now convinced that mining companies are the devil incarnate, who oppress the poor indigenous in order to rape the great God Gaia of the earth's treasures.

  11. Australia used to smelt copper, iron, and lead so why are we just digging dirt and sending it elsewhere. We used to refine our own oil as well so – what happened? A few very rich mining barons are making too much money for doing very little but I would have thought giving thousands of people jobs would help the economy a lot more.

  12. After Covid, we should not be doing business with China. They hit Australia with penalties for wanting an investigation into the origins of Covid 19. China owes Australia massive compensation for their actions and Australia's colossal debt resulting from those actions. What happened to diversifying and bringing manufacturing back to Australia? Useless leaders.

  13. i got about 0:00 far into the video and i can see all these smiling faces….. huh life must be good for that lot, funny that isnt it, everyone on tb is smiling and happy, everyone out on the street is frowning and upset, really goes to show who australia treats well, and its not the hard workers

  14. Australia could form a military alliance with North Korea, Russia and China. The United States has become a little too famous for shitting on its allies and Trump has taken this to a whole new level. The USA would likely donate Western Australia to a foreign power and demand a minerals deal in return for the favour. Remember when Poland was donated to Stalin.
