Sky News contributor Joe Hildebrand says the government is “overhauling” Australia’s education system.

The Australian reports some universities are taking students who have HSC results as low as 39 per cent.

The report says that there’s 15 universities accepting students into teaching degrees with ATAR’s lower than 60.

  1. If the government doesn't want an intelligent free thinking population what do you expect is going to happen….Keep them dumb so we can control the population….I wonder what Politicians ATAR scores were?

  2. ATARs are over-rated. Pretty soon the higher education sector will follow business and dispense with them entirely. Our child of our sibling is completing year-12 this year. Already they work one day a week as a cadet professional within a large multi-national. Their employers have told them not to worry about their ATAR, just finish year-12 so they can start with them full time.

  3. Here’s a simple plan for you, Australia, anybody who’s against choice in education is a person who wants to control education and the population. You need school choice and that includes homeschool and throw the money towards the homeschoolers who really care about their child’s education.

  4. So it's even more of the "Put em' ALL into inescapable debt TO the government (who used to serve and invest IN them but now serves them on a platter to itself)" initiative……I just finished teaching at one of the major Australian uni businesses, the uni's and their government partners are now completely and utterly shameless.

  5. They should start by giving them INDIVIDUAL scores again instead of COLLECTIVISED (and less-meaningful/less-individual) rankings like Rotten Tomatoes serfs…..They should also start teaching them how to disseminate information and value critical-thinking rather than deliberately over-prioritising those critical-thinking negating 'feelings' and ideological less-think instead, which they SHOULD have done the moment we entered the mass information era, where they instead chose to regress them into conformist/approval aspiring sheep.

  6. When you have politicians who can't govern and are worried about what everyone says – they are not to be trusted. Albo even says when he fell off stage – he never fell. That has basically stupid labor are. Just lie about anything and everything.

And could you imagine the things these clowns would want taught in our schools. Labor can't govern and they are running a shit show. You can tell when a political party has given up – they don't know what they are doing.

So they try and control everything people say and do. That's the labor way. What is more important is not Australia. It's what people are saying is what labor really loses sleep over.

  7. People saying teachers need higher pay shows good will but not informed knowledge of teachers or teaching or the education/university training, more and more money is an excuse throwing money is not the solution.
Generally it's not realized that many parents are semi/non illiterate now it appears many teachers are have very limited literacy numeracy skills.
Teaching used to be a respected position and you had to be in the top scoring high school students to even be able to get into teaching. You were then given a scholarship and went to a teacher training college where you developed informed researched sound effective teaching skills.
Those days are long gone now "Billy the pig" and/or a low ATAR can be admitted to teaching .

  8. Perhaps we need to scrap the ATAR as well. I graduated well before they started, but having so much riding on the results of a single test can affect the results. I never scored under 98% for an in class biology exam but scored something like 30% during my HSC. I think I'd actually be a pretty good teacher but my exam results would exclude me from the profession. I think we need a better way of measuring standards.
