Australia faces China’s fury after controversial election promise

Peter Dutton and Anthony Albanese have both vowed to take back the Port of Darwin if they win the 2025 election.

The Port of Darwin, one of Australia’s most important strategic bases, is currently controlled by Chinese company Landbridge under a deal signed with the Northern Territory government in 2015.

But the deal has long been controversial after Landbridge’s links to the Chinese Communist Party were revealed.

Both Dutton and Albanese have been accused of using the Darwin port as a “political football”, as they raced to be the first to announce taking action on it.

Meanwhile, the nation is bracing for a furious reaction from the Chinese government.

What is the Port of Darwin, why is it so controversial, and why is it so important to both Australia and China? Here’s a breakdown.

  2. So basically NT got $500 million now going to federal government for $1.5 billion to buy it back…

Canberra should pass a law saying national assets like this can’t be sold or leased, if private ownership can’t be sold abroad (if the states/territories complain withhold federal funding). It should never have been an asset to sell to balance the books or bribe the electorate.

  3. It sounds a lot like the lease purchase was purchased under deception & is null & void . If they knew the company leasing the port was 100% foreign owned by China the lease agreement would never been given.

As my memory think's China wanted to purchase the Largest cattle station in Australia KIDMAN STATION & they were not allowed under the rules of foreign investment of Australian companies & that's when Gina Rinehart step in as a business partner & purchased 51% of the cattle station & the Chinese company hold 49%

  4. alnbaneze had all the time to do something but wont and now suddenly he will… isnt it strange just like the cost of living crisis… while he spends billions on buying abo votes with his 'voice'

  5. Existing ports in Brisbane, Sydney are completely unable to deliver serces services in timly and effective manner. It coukd take week or two to dispense single contaier from port and another two to get it back empty. Port service charge are astronomical. Chines coukd show us to estsblish port working efficiently here in Australia

  6. It's not owned by the Chinese government but by a Chinese Company. If course, it was a moronic decision to sell it in the first place. That's what you get if you voted for the LNP or any of its subsidiary parties.

  7. When you go to vote in the upcoming election, keep one thing foremost in your mind and that is the fact that the Liberals leased this port to the Chinese and that Malcolm Turnbull signed off on the deal. It makes Peter Dutton's rhetoric about the security of Australia an absolute joke.

  8. This is about national security and it was incredibly foolish of whichever politican leased the port to China. I mean why? that is a massive threat yet it was still done despite knowing China has been a threat for over a decade. China under the CCP will kick and scream about losing this port but I guarentee the CCP would NEVER allow an Australian company to lease a Chinese port in China, never. I hope the new Australian government actually gets this port back as China is literally circling Australia like a Great white waiting to attack.

  9. Speaking of selling or leasing Australian taxpayer assets, why did the Australian government sell, Telstra and Commonwealth bank? Both were making huge profits for the government. Why would anyone sell something that is making them a lot of money?

  10. And considering that our biggest military ally, 'Murica, is now well on the way to collapse and their President will sell his influence to the highest bidder, it makes sense to ensure that a hostile overseas government that is notorious for Human Rights violations, espionage, bribery and corruption and has a vested interest in grabbing territory, mines and farmlands to fuel its flagging economy and horrendously large population.

  11. name the ones responsible for the decision to sell this Australian asset and demand an explanation.
Also name those whose bank accounts received the money from this treacherous deal.

  12. That little cross is a couple hundred kms off. I guess it’s close to Port Keats. I was worried the Chinese have found our Golden Snapper and Black Jewfish GPS waypoints for a second.

  13. The Port should NEVER have been leased to China in the first place. China has been allowed to buy far too much land in Australia, including, farms etc. Which bright spark allowed all this to happen?

  14. imagine thinking it's a great idea to lease a key access point to the enemy….. oh wait…..

how dumb can you get? i called this happening well before now, and it's egg on the faces of labor AND liberals. not sure who leased it, but fairly certain it was probably the liberals as they've been in power more often than labor.
