Voters are increasingly looking beyond the major parties, to a slew of independents and minor parties. A hung parliament seems relatively likely this election. The last time we had a hung parliament, in 2010, it took 17 days to sort out the final result. Now those involved have a tip or two for the players in 2025.

  1. A Party presents to the electorate its policies and governmental intentions. Elected, it has a mandate. If it delivers on its policies and the policies are what suits the electorate, it's re elected. If it doesn't, kicked out. The trouble with minority government and independents-minor parties holding the balance, a duly elected government is estopped from carrying out its mandate. The last minority government, Gillard-led ALP, in reliance upon the Greens, came up with absurd discrimination legislation which haunts us to this day, nonsensical decisions on transgender rights over women's rights an example and let's not forget the Carbon Tax debacle because the ALP needed Greens support.

  2. The change in how party preference flows are counted in 2016 has contributed to my and many peoples choice of first preference. It used to be confusing to many what would happen to their vote if they voted for a minor party. Now, it's clear that your vote flows exactly as you direct it so people are taking that into account.

  3. Most of the effect of Negative Gearing and Discounts on Capital gains tax are existing houses rather than newly built houses.if it get removed…ex.if you buy a house for a $2 million..in a year price go up for $1 million so they get a capital gains of 500k profit..not bad for rich people…GREENS getting rid of these policies would be an earth shaking change…BRING IT ON GREENS..get rid of this policies… Negative Gearing and discounts on Capital gains tax which is the root cause of homelessness in Australia.. increase in house prices.. increase in rent and cost of livin 11:55 g…😮😮😮

  4. Most people realize no party or independent can possibly meet the expectations in all areas of govt,100% . Even within a Party there are degrees of priority differences but at least the policies they put up front are those which are agreed upon within. Independents try to fill a nitch but in the end they too have their issues. Campaigns are not the time my vote is won or lost. My vote is based on prior actions of Parties. The National no longer work in the best interest of rural communities. Mining interests now control the LNP. ALP have always represented the interest of the workers regardless of where they live. If you are not in the top 10% you're a worker, either as a small business, self employed or employee. I've been all three & appreciate the party that has made it possible by striving to improve the general standard of living & work conditions to benefit overall.

  5. i really hope australians vote to abolish the corporate neoliberal duopoly that has spent the last 30+ years privatising and destroying everything that used to be good about this country

  6. If independants can pull Labor to the left that can only be a good thing. We need less coal & more renewables. Then again independant doesnt always mean environmentally friendly. Always do your research

  7. @Paul Fletcher: They aren't your votes, they are our votes to give. Us great unwashed masses are not happy with what you are selling, so we're directing our votes to candidates that better reflect what the community wants.

  8. There are many issues where the two major parties refuse to adopt a policy at all. If I don't want coal and gas mines to expand and I want house prices to fall, who do I vote for?

  9. The main issue is that with the two major parties is that it's a race to the bottom. Neither of the parties truely represents what most Australians want. They have consistently put their donors at the forefront of their actions and voters are sick of being ignored. You are there to serve us not your big corporate donors. That's why more and more people are moving towards independents. Unless there is a massive shake up, the trend will continue as more people are disillusioned with the two majors
