As an 73yo Engineer, its interesting to speculate what drew the lightning to this specific house. Was the roof Corrigated iron ??
Generally lightening hits highest object in an area, often trees near houses; or on commercial building most have a roof mounted "lightening rod" pointing up to sky, thats connected by insulated cabling all the way down to a Earth stake or Earth Grid burried in the ground
I am not familiar with the latest Australian Standard for Lightning protection, as to whether it includes Residental Homes.
Something for your Reporter to Investigate.
My own house in the Yarra Ranges, east of Healesville has a lot of High Trees around it, BUT a large area Corrigated Iron roof, thats not "earthed" to a ground stake.
So time to investigate this point, as we had at least 6 VERY close lightning strikes last night (small hrs of 3rd Feb 2024)

In Geelong, we had very strong fierce hailstones, I went out side, ot was very " painful" on my head when I was struck by powerful hailstones .
I thought all the windows in my house and the door would smash down.
