  1. Notice at around 8:25 the maid is on the porch smoking a cigarette. At around 8:40 she puts out the cigarette on a brick and in doing so loosens a brick in the wall. Back in those days practically everyone smoked.

I think the director for fun was perhaps sending a hidden message that cigarettes back then were strong…. strong enough to move a brick.

He then after this scene would have a break for a commercial advertising Marlboro cigarettes, "A strong man's smoke for a strong man's enjoyment, filter free for a man's strong satisfaction … and perhaps for a rugged manly maid here and there!"

  2. I reckon everybody is uploading this and other Rathbone & Bruce (Holmes & Watson) films

  3. Thanks for posting. I am enjoying these! Rathbone's closing lines are always a treat. Here we have him close with, "I'm thinking of all the women who can come and go in safety on the streets of London tonight. Stars keep watch in the heavens and, in our own little way, we too, old friend, a privilege to watch over our city."
