Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles has rejected Chinese ambassador Xiao Qian’s invitation to “join hands” with Beijing to resist Donald Trump’s tariffs, saying Australia will pursue its own interests by diversifying its trade and reducing its reliance on China.

Mr Trump has now set tariffs for all countries except China at 10 per cent, and has threatened China with tariffs of 125 per cent, posing a risk to the Australian economy given its reliance on Chinese demand.
