The south-east Queensland coast has been lashed by major swells, with parked vehicles washed away at popular oceanside venues.
Videos posted online show powerful waves crashing through the beachfront car park at Currumbin Beach Vikings Surf Life Saving Club on the Gold Coast, wiping out two cars left there.
The looming weather event has also triggered panic buying in Byron Bay, just south of the NSW and QLD border, with shelves stripped bare at the local Woolworths.
