BEVERLY HILLS COP 3 – Awfully Good Movies

With Eddie Murphy returning to the throne of Prince Akeem in COMING 2 AMERICA, Awfully Good Movies is looking back at the final collaboration between Murphy and the director of the first COMING TO AMERICA, John Landis, in the sequel that killed Axel Foley: BEVERLY HILLS COP III!

As the mid-90s saw both Eddie and John in the midst of a career slump, Murphy decided to make up with Landis after their tensions during COMING TO AMERICA’s production for another sequel to the action-comedy smash which established Eddie as one of the biggest stars of the 80s. But instead of making up for the lesser quality of BEVERLY HILLS COP II, the third installment ended up cutting off all the edges that made Axel F. such a beloved action hero, as Murphy insisted on playing Axel as a more mature and less wiseass character, while secretly suffering from depression that’d been brought about from Eddie’s last couple of box office disappointments.

So no matter how much Landis tries to have fun with Axel searching for his boss’ killer in a Disneyland-style amusement park, his star’s lack of enthusiasm puts a damper on the woefully few moments of decent action and funny comedy. And although the returning Judge Reinhold and Bronson Pinchot try to bring back the magic of the first film, they can’t save this series from a lackluster finale which to this day has kept Axel Foley suspended from the force. Fingers crossed that the upcoming BEVERLY HILLS COP IV on Netflix doesn’t have Eddie fighting crime alongside himself in a female fatsuit.

  1. Funny summary. Cop 3 was funny and more family friendly than the other films. There are plenty of jokes and more hand to hand combat and stunts than the prior movies. The tone is lighter. My main complaint is that the final fight should've been longer. I enjoyed Cop 3. It's definitely underrated.

  2. This is a very underrated movie. I also like the composer updating the Axel Foley theme for some epic orchestral versions

  3. That scene of Axel’s face on the 20 dollar bills popping out of the printing machine was the only redeeming scene of the entire film.

  4. This isn’t a review so much as it is just whining about things. “Axel wouldn’t pay for a ticket to a park as an f-u to society…” yeah, I’m sure he’s never paid for anything his entire life, lol.

There are far, far worse movies out there than this one. While it’s not as great the first two, it’s fine. The chemistry between Axel and Billy is still solid, have a cop show set in a theme park is a unique idea, and Ellis is a good bad guy. There are things to like about it, but it was obvious you were never going to be impartial on this one.

  5. Cop 3 has more action than the first two films combined. Foley has more fistfights in this is film and his humor is still there it's just more subtle. Randle is great as his love interest.

  6. Cop 3 was funny and had plenty of action. Harlem Nights, Distinguished Gentleman and Norbit we're all financially successful films. Metro was a funny action film and it was underrated. Cop 3 was financially successful and it earned over $100 million dollars on a $50 million dollar budget.

  7. But it did prove that Axel Foley was the truth hero Eddie Murphy had to write that down make a Beverly hills cop 4

  8. they should have used his early injuries in the 2nd and 3rd act

  9. I remember when BHC III movie came out and it was on Pay Per View (My dad had a illegal black box that gave us all the channels) and we were excited ! Well…. that excitement quickly faded as this movie, even as a young pup was terrible and i tried watching it recently and it as NOT gotten better. The first 2 movies were pretty good but not this one.

  10. Landis killed my childhood twice in the 90s directing this abomination of a sequel to the awesome Beverly hills Cop franchise and directing the god awful sequel to my favorite movie of all time The Blues Brothers a movie that HE DIRECTED😠

  11. Movie may have flopped but this movie was a huge part of my childhood…it was even more exciting because my local amusement park California's Great America played a central role in it.

  12. Beverly Hills cop 3 wasnt a bad movie. It had a few spots that were iffy but it was a change of pace from the first 2. Eddie Murphy's comedic style fit the direction. I dont know anyone personally that doesnt like it and can still quote funny lines from it.

I never seen Coming to America 2, mostly because i dont want to destroy the memory of a CLASSIC with a NON needed sequel, but i can wholeheartedly say BHC3 was better overall. I didnt want to see C2A2 because so of the cast as well and i was happy to hear alot of my folk didnt enjoy it. Its all opinion but Eddie made some classic moments in this movie….and ive watched it at least 4 times since it dropped.

  13. At the Razzies, it was nominated for Worst Remake or Sequel and Worst Director for John Landis

  14. Don't say serrrrrrrge sounds like a deterrrrrrgent.

    Bronson saved this movie

  15. Metro was good! Lol nekkid on the beach in tahiti

  16. I still love this movie dammit

  17. The Haunted Mansion was better than BHC3

  18. That was both a very enjoyable video and a great movie review from you. I also greatly enjoyed director John Landis' trademark of incorporating latter movie directors into his films.

  19. Couldn’t even finish Beverly Hills Cop 3. One of the most dull films I’ve ever seen.

  20. Excuse me I enjoyed blues brothers 2000. The whole reason my first car was an LTD.

  21. Metro couldve been Beverly Hills Cop3. It was gritty like the first cop film and just as good

  22. One of my favorite action series of the 80s. I loved Judge in movies
I still love this movie. Sad that Eddie was in a depression and it definitely came across in the movie.

  23. This was always a more ridiculous film of the three, but I still enjoy it, probably nostalgia but whatever, great memories.

  24. I'm not gonna lie….I actually enjoyed watching this movie as a kid. Don't judge me!!
