BEVERLY HILLS COP 3 – Awfully Good Movies

With Eddie Murphy returning to the throne of Prince Akeem in COMING 2 AMERICA, Awfully Good Movies is looking back at the final collaboration between Murphy and the director of the first COMING TO AMERICA, John Landis, in the sequel that killed Axel Foley: BEVERLY HILLS COP III!

As the mid-90s saw both Eddie and John in the midst of a career slump, Murphy decided to make up with Landis after their tensions during COMING TO AMERICA’s production for another sequel to the action-comedy smash which established Eddie as one of the biggest stars of the 80s. But instead of making up for the lesser quality of BEVERLY HILLS COP II, the third installment ended up cutting off all the edges that made Axel F. such a beloved action hero, as Murphy insisted on playing Axel as a more mature and less wiseass character, while secretly suffering from depression that’d been brought about from Eddie’s last couple of box office disappointments.

So no matter how much Landis tries to have fun with Axel searching for his boss’ killer in a Disneyland-style amusement park, his star’s lack of enthusiasm puts a damper on the woefully few moments of decent action and funny comedy. And although the returning Judge Reinhold and Bronson Pinchot try to bring back the magic of the first film, they can’t save this series from a lackluster finale which to this day has kept Axel Foley suspended from the force. Fingers crossed that the upcoming BEVERLY HILLS COP IV on Netflix doesn’t have Eddie fighting crime alongside himself in a female fatsuit.

  1. I’ve always enjoyed this movie. In fact I’d say the only Eddie Murphy movies I’ve seen that I can say are garbage are norbit and coming to America 2. This rest scales from hilarious high to entertaining low.

  2. BHC 3 was a million times better than the atrocity called Coming 2 America.

  3. Eddie Murphy did not have a resurgence lol

  4. The character Eddie Murphy is portraying in this movie is not Axel Foley. Axel Foley in the first two movies was hilarious, reliable, likable, and most importantly would always jump in and out of characters to get his way.

The idea of a “mature” Axel Foley means that at some point Axel decided “man I’ve been wrong all along. I really shouldn’t be this way” but why would he come to that conclusion when things went so well for him before?

  5. 3 was my fav in the 90s as a kid and still is at almost 40 lol MR ELLIS DEWALT EVERYONE

  6. The scene where Axel shot in to the sky was meant to make sure the customers had eyes on him in case security was going to shoot him in broad daylight

  7. 9:50 – ohh, I have read about the infamous "Twilight Zone" disaster/debacle (epic fail).

  8. I don’t hate this movie at all. I’m probably biased in that it was my introduction to Eddie Murphy’s adult work since I’d only seen him in Shrek and the Haunted Mansion up to that point so to see him cuss and shoot bad guys made me think he was cool

  9. Did Timothy Carhart channel Gavin Newsom for this role? Or vice versa?

  10. I mean this is definitely the weakest of the trilogy it still has it’s good moments

  11. This movie was good. crocodile Dundee 3 was bad.

  12. I had actually forgotten this movie existed.

  13. I have to give credit where it is due. The mascots playing poker with their masks still on is a pretty good visual gag even if it doesn't make any sense.

  14. Yeah, him paying the ticket was weird. What is even weirder is that this the one time that Foley would have been justified in causing a scene because he actually was expected to be there.

  15. I remember reading that Bronson Pincho said that Eddie Murphy was very down about something while filming this movie. He didn't have the same energy he did in the first.

    wouldn't have cheated on

  18. As a lot of folks did, I fell in love with that Detroit Lions letterman's jacket from BHC 2. Cobbled my own together. NFL shop even made an official release of this jacket, which was limited enough to spawn a load of knock-offs. (yes I was lucky and have one). That being said, If foley had worn that jacket in the first one…my first one would be my favorite. As it stands, BHC 2 I'm more familiar with…but MAD magazine ruined the suspension of disbelief for me! BHC 3…nice jacket.🙃

  19. I mean you guys outside of minnesota may have an idea that bemiji isn't that nice of a place but it's a really shitty part of minnesota. And who knows maybe that would of turned out better this this movie

  20. I feel like Ellis Dewald looks more like Tucker Carlson than Robert Stack. 🤔

  21. Jesus is this review flimsy, tone deaf and flat out anhedonic.

Ironically BHC3 has a larger bodycount than either prior film, and a ton of action for a '90's film (bombastic 80's'esque action flicks were no longer in fashion at the time, anymore than mad hair or shoulderboards were). Was also not a financial flop (albeit not a major hit either), which many third films had been.

  22. Funny summary. Cop 3 was funny and more family friendly than the other films. There are plenty of jokes and more hand to hand combat and stunts than the prior movies. The tone is lighter. My main complaint is that the final fight should've been longer. I enjoyed Cop 3. It's definitely underrated.
