There are growing concerns US tariffs on cars made outside the US, set to be implemented next month, will upend global supply chains, and raise prices on all cars including EVs in America. Donald Trump says the tariffs will be a net neutral or even positive for Tesla, because it has manufacturing plants in the US. In recent months electric vehicles sales for Elon Musk’s company have plummeted due to negative sentiment around his political involvement. But Pitcher Partners’ Steven Bragg says Australian consumers could be big winners as more vehicles make their way into the Australian market, in place of the US, potentially keeping down prices. Mr Bragg says the dominance of Chinese-owned BYD in Australia, comes down to its tech, as well as the speed and efficiency of its manufacturing process which has made its prices competitive.
