Dr Mohammed Mustafa was greeted by a cheering crowd on his return to Australia after treating patients in Gaza.

Reflecting on the suffering he witnessed, he urged Australians to show greater compassion for families and children affected by airstrikes.

“Just because I have a blue passport that says Australian on it, doesn’t mean I am more worthy of living than those children,” he said.

Officials at the al-Ahli Arab Baptist Hospital evacuated patients from the building on Sunday after one person said he’d received a call from someone who identified himself with Israeli security shortly before the attack took place.

The Israeli military said it had taken steps to reduce harm to civilians before it struck the compound, claiming Hamas militants were using it to plan attacks.

Update: Initial reports suggested there were no casualties from the attack. Recent reports say at least one person has died because staff were unable to treat her during the evacuation.
