The latest trade data from the International Trade Administration in the US has revealed Australian visitor numbers have plummeted 7 per cent in March this year compared to March 2024. CEO and founder of Flight Centre, Graham Turner says it’s going to get worse this month and next. Mr Turner says the leisure travel numbers numbers in April were down even more, and some adventure tour operators he’s spoken to are down between 40 and 50 per cent. However, he says while business travel has remained steady, the negative sentiment could spill over to the corporate market. The reasons Mr Turner states for Australians avoiding the US mainly centre around President Donald Trump, but there are some concerns with travellers around border control and entry conditions. Flight Centre operates around the world including Canada and the US. Mr Turner says the he’s seen the most significant pullback on Canadians travelling to the US, as well as Europe and the UK. Graham Turner also discusses what the impact the trade war between the US and China could have on the travel market, particularly following China’s ban on US-made Boeing planes.
