An extraordinary row has blown up in the US senate over the nation’s relationship with Australia.

Tensions have flared over Donald Trump’s “insulting” decision to tariff Australian exports, during a fiery exchange in the US Senate.

Addressing the Senate finance committee, Democratic Senator Mark Warner questioned US trade representative Jamieson Greer over why Australia, “an incredibly important national security partner”, had been “whacked” with a 10 per cent levy.

Mr Greer revealed that the reason for the tariff was America’s need to “address the $1.2 trillion (trade) deficit, the largest in human history, that President Biden left us with”, adding the nation “should be running up the score on Australia”.

Also, NO COUNTRY ON EARTH has stood by the US in wartime, no other nation has fought by the side of the US as much as we have. US demands out tech but restricts the same level going to Australia. Its an Australian anti missile system PROTECTING US WARSHIPS if their missiles fail, and it has saved 7 separate ships who were close to being destroyed. Trump is getting very bad advice.

I don’t think US food would meet our food safest standards, they pump it full of antibiotics and carcinogenic colours/preservatives that are banned countries of the US.

No one buys food from the US if they can avoid it.

We don't take US beef due to our already huge beef industry and I do believe Mad cow had something once upon a time to do with it – I could well be wrong on that. We have a very stringent bio policy here so this would explain a lot.

Our Government takes it very seriously and won't import meat that comes from countries where foot and mouth disease is found. That is why pets and other animals can't be bought into Australia without going into quarantine first, ask Amber Heard, her dog was going to be put down because she smuggled it in. Look i t up.

meat or diary , its really bad in USA. in diary industry i once inspected , found that chicken inards and pork inards were fed to cow . except that medicines which were used , have cancer causing elements and can cause liver failure …. No human should consume it … companies are only focus on profiting there sadly

If my state added a 10% sales tax the media would barely mention it, with good reason, it would have little impact either way.
But if Trump scratches 10% of his nose, it's global news somehow.

It's not that most Australian's are anti-American; U.S food is terrible (we are adopting more and more of the American standards over the last 20-30 years. along with drugs, both types, and modern U.S ''culture'' , Old U.S Culture was great, Australia was similar – pioneering etc; Australia was a mix of U.K, Australian and U.S culture, we are more and more Americanised, and i'am not happy with that).

There are things i don't like about the U.S, there are things i'm neutral about and there are many things i like about the U.S (some i don't want here though…shrug); Same with many other countries.

40-ish years ago just about every suburb had a Fish & Chip shop, a milk bar/take-away (bread, milk shakes, hamburgers, ice-creams, sweets, milk, butter, smokes etc), and/or a general shop; now most have disappeared, i live in a small city – 250k i know of 4 Fish & Chip shops that are fairly close to me, 1 is good, and sells CHIPS instead of fries (I hate Fries), some of the problem is McDonalds (haven't liked it in 20+ years) and Burger king (Hungry Jacks) but i don't Blame them for all it the Problem.

If America/Americans didn't want our beef because it was bad (unhealthy/low quality), i wouldn't be upset qith America, i'd be upset with our cattle industry (we now use mostly Brahman cattle – more resistant to arid/low-water conditions), i don't think it's as nice as what we used to use, so theres that….

Australia does not restrict US beef if it is born, raised & slaughtered in the US & is traceable. It restricts beef that is born & bred in Canada or Mexico but exported as US beef. Therefore its origin can not be traced . This is a bio security issue.

You don't punish friends who have had long held free-trade relationships with you and clearly the balance of payments are in your favour. Don't whine about beef and pork, we have a surplus of this. It's called exports and our economy is reliant on this. We have no protectionism in place of our farmers because we have an open market that is not subsidised by our government. What you are doing lacks equity, fairness or common-sense. Disappointing…..

We don't need Autralian beef and they dont want ours. They are disease free and want to stay that way. Brazilian beef is THE single biggest challenge and cause for climate change. Rain forests are cleared to raise beef. Co2 is going up because of this a lot more than fossil fuels are. Reinvest in our own farms and ranches. They fed us for centuries and want their lives back

A. Australia has a trade surplus with the USA. We were a very good customer. This is not how you treat a good customer.

B. Australia has strict biosecurity laws. If you can’t show evidence of where and how your beef was grown (and if it doesn’t pass our laws), it can’t enter our country. Simple. We are an island nation with very vulnerable ecosystems. Our entire farming industry could be wiped out by invasive species, virus’s and pests.
